Israeli Government Recalls Envoys To Ireland, Norway Over Palestinian State Recognition
AFP reports that the Israeli Foreign Minister, Katz as saying in a statement on Wednesday, "Today, I am sending a sharp message to Ireland and Norway: Israel will not go over this in silence. I have just ordered the return of the Israeli ambassadors from Dublin and Oslo to Israel for further consultations in Jerusalem.
The Israel government has recalled its envoys from Ireland and Norway for "urgent consultations" as the two countries set to announce their formal recognition of a Palestinian state.
"The hasty steps of the two countries will have further serious consequences. If Spain realises its intention to recognise a Palestinian state, a similar step will be taken against it."
The Norwegian Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Store, in a press conference on Wednesday announced that it will as of May 28 recognise Palestine as an independent state.
Also, Ireland's leaders reportedly scheduled to hold a news conference at 0700 GMT after earlier signaling that Ireland would recognise Palestinian independent State by the end of the month.
Similarly, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said last week that he would announce on Wednesday a date for recognising a State of Palestine.
But an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures reportedly indicated that the Israeli foreign minister said the moves by the European countries were a reward for Palestinian militant group Hamas and its unprecedented October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians.
Katz was quoted as saying, "Ireland and Norway intend to send a message to the Palestinians and the whole world today: Terrorism pays.
"The twisted step of these countries is an injustice to the memory of the 7/10 victims."
